About Us, the folks (and dogs) behind Happy Mango Beads

Happy Mango Beads is an internet based business located near the foothills of the Colorado Rocky Mountains in a small town called Berthoud. It all started about 25 years ago when Dan & Rudi Taylor began collecting African Trade Beads as a hobby. As the collection grew they tried selling some of the beads and “Happy Mango Beads” was born. Because of Dan & Rudi’s love of travel (and history in the import/export field) it was the perfect business for them. Now they travel all over the world to countries such as; Peru, Nepal, Indonesia, China, Ghana, Italy (to name a few) in search of special beads, pendants and amulets. Dan & Rudi LOVE their work and they love beads - we believe the Happy Mango Beads website is a reflection of that.

Also working at Happy Mango Beads:

Whitney - She’s always singing!  Whitney is Dan & Rudi’s right-hand woman.  She coordinates bead production in several countries and travels whenever necessary.  Besides working for HMB she operates her own web-based business, check it out at Little Mango Imports.  She is a graduate from the University of Colorado at Boulder with degrees in International Affairs & International Economics.  To add to her already heavy load, Whitney is also the coach of the Nederland, Colorado High School ski team and she has trained in karate since the young age of 6 and she currently holds a 4th degree black belt!  Whitney also enjoys photography, hiking, painting and throwing great theme parties.

Samantha -
Sam is invaluable!  She is a busy mom of 3 who considers work her "vacation" - seriously!  Though she sometimes has to help in the warehouse she found her niche in advertising.  She handles nearly all marketing and promotions for Happy Mango Beads.  If you follow us on Twitter, then you most likely have met Samantha.  Honestly, if it weren’t for her we might appear as just a simple, boring company, she makes us look good!  Twitter has become a family past time as her husband and children compete to come up with creative "beady" sayingsSam's Border Collie, Mozart, frequently travels to the warehouse to hang out with Stella & Tinkerbell.  In her spare time Samantha also enjoys swimming, traveling and volunteer work.

Donna - Donna is our office manger and lives in nearby Ft Collins with her partner, Becky.  Their family includes 4 incredible kids (an artist/student, a biologist, an anthropologist and an RN), plus an amazing grandchild, 3 cats: Em (short for Eczema), Chaco, and Ria (short for Psoriasis), a dog, Buddy, and a fish named Philippe.  Family adventures are high on her priority list and so is cleanliness and organization - we love this about Donna!  In her spare time she also enjoys interior design, needlework, volunteering, writing and camping.  There is a rule in her home: you can never have too many books or houseplants!  In Donna’s own words, “I'm a Libra - so balance, order and harmony are lynchpins to a happy life.”

Emily
- Emily is a senior student at CU Boulder and is majoring in geography and Spanish.  She is a full time student and a part-time HMBer, but her skills in the office and warehouse, as well as her fluent Spanish make her irreplaceable. She loves traveling and doesn’t mind backpacking alone for weeks in a foreign country, absorbing the culture and learning their ways.  Emily loves yoga, dogs, volunteering, cooking and making hand-made gifts. In her free time Emily can be found hiking in our local national park or jammin’ on the ukulele.

Christy - The newest member of our HMB team. She works in our warehouse, learning the tricks of the trade. She lives in Loveland with her partner Wayne. They have three grown girls which means Christy is blessed with four beautiful grandbabies (Boone, Siriana, Kane and Parker). When not working or chasing babies, Christy spends her time with her two dogs, Fate and Luna, and one noisy cat, CJ. She loves to travel, do yoga, golf, garden, fish, ski, mountain bike, and hike. She spends as much time outdoors as possible, and she is currently training for The Tough Mudder in June of this year - she hopes to survive!  She likes to read, knit, sew and do crafts; she actually has a room in her house just for this; it's called 'the lounge'. Christy looks forward to the adventure that each day brings.

Tinkerbell, Cricket, Harley & Stella
 - Honestly they aren’t the best workers…they are ALWAYS underfoot, but of course they don’t get paid either.  Tinkerbell (she was a rescue, she came with that name) is a Rat Terrier and she likes napping under the shipping table.  Cricket is a Chihuahua and she's a rescued puppy mill survivor, she's still very shy and timid with most people, but enjoys playing chase through the aisles of beads.  Harley, also a Chihuahua, is a one-eyed, crippled, but happy, puppy mill survivor, he's a senior guy who loves his sleep.  Stella the Anatolian Shepherd comes to work almost daily, even if Dan & Rudi (her owners) are out of town.  When she arrives in the morning she always has to run around smelling all the beads, it's an odd thing, but somebody has to do it!

Zoie (in memory of) - Zoie was the "star of the show".  She was a 4lb blue Chihuahua and she died too young (not quite 7) and we miss her terribly.  Zoie posed in many of our magazine ads.  She used to bury her bones in piles of beads!

Pearl (in memory of) - Some of you might remember Pearl - she was the “boss” of Happy Mango Beads for many years.  Pearl passed away 6 years ago after a long bout with Cushings Disease.  She was a good ‘ol girl and she loved to wear beads!  Her picture remains on this page.
