Agate:
Agate is found all over the world. The main areas include Africa, Asia, Brazil, Egypt, Germany, India, Italy, Mexico, Nepal, and the USA.
Agate is a variety of chalcedony and occurs in many forms. Most agates occur as nodules in volcanic rocks or ancient lavas where they represent cavities originally produced by the disengagement of magma in the molten mass. Some of the varieties of agate are Botswana agate, eye agate, moss agate, olive agate, and plume agate. On occasion very small quartz crystals (called drusys) are formed within the stone. These inclusions add to the magnificence and uniqueness of the stone. Agates are found in an array of colors, although green and blue are rather rare.
Agate is a harder stone and ranges from 7-9 on the Moh’s scale.
