'Bead my Valentine' Beading Contest  2012 WINNERS!

This was the second year we held this contest and we were excited to see the contrast in designs compared to 2011.  With a Valentine theme it's normal to expect a lot of similarities, but that certainly wasn't the case!  There were 72 entries in this contest and once again we were happy to leave the judging to a panel of experts.  We are thankful to everyone who entered, we value your time, effort and creativity!  Contests like this make working at Happy Mango Beads a fun job!   PRIZES: Our overall grand prize winner won a $100 gift certificate to Happy Mango Beads, honorable mention won a $50 gift certificate and each category winner won a $25 gift certificate.

Comments from the judges:
  • "When I was first asked to judge this contest I thought, hmmmm, heart stuff?  I am so glad I accepted the offer to judge because now I am in love with hearts and the theme and I owe it all to the talented entrants in this contest.  I spent days going over all the photographs.  I must have looked at each photo a hundred times.  I'm personally attached to each and every item of jewelry as if I'd worn each piece myself.!
  • "I hope all the participants realize how awesome and inspiring they are.  I admit, some of the photography could have been better.  Sharper, brighter photos are necessary for us to best judge an entry.  I was honored to have a part in judging this contest.
  • "Thank you, Happy Mango Beads, for the opportunity to judge this contest.  I never imagined it would be so difficult!  Such brilliant work everyone!

Honorable Mention!
Congratulations Keirsten Giles for "Melancholy Romance"
"This necklace features a metalwork heart pendant and coordinating heart charm, both made by me, in textured, antiqued copper. I chose colors in the red family, in honor of Valentine's Day--deep berry, dark red, red violet, raspberry and aubergine. The large beads are handcrafted lampwork glass (by Pat Redinger of BeingBeads on Etsy), and the hand-painted silk ribbon (by Color Kissed Silk on Etsy) is dotted with tiny pearls, Swarovski crystals, and a little copper heart. It fastens in front with a toggle closure. All of the copper findings in this necklace (except for the crimp covers) were handcrafted by me. Keirsten Giles

Roses are Red (flowers) – Jonnie Weeks "Love is Alive"
"Red is a color of passion, desire and love, so naturally it was my first choice for a Valentine's Day themed project. Done in bead embroidery, I created this necklace by stitching pink jasper focal beads to a background of felt, and carefully surrounding them with these vivid coral branch beads. I finished it of with strands of seed beads in a brushed silver tone, for a slightly modern touch to an otherwise organic design. Jonnie Weeks

Puppy Love (animals) – Allison Cooling "Puppies in Pink"
"My necklace, titled "Puppies in Pink", is all about Valentine's Day! I love dogs, so naturally I chose the "Puppy Love" category. My necklace features multiple strands with a large handmade bow center pendant for maximum impact. A strand of white pearls, a strand of pink rose quartz (the stone of love) from Happy Mango Beads, a hand-woven fabric and chain (made from a fabric scrap!) strand, and finally a hand-sewn pearl and ribbon strand make up the base of my necklace. Then, I repurposed old plastic dollhouse-sized dogs into cute charms, and completed each of those with a hand-tied pink thread bow! I also handmade small pink heart charms from polymer clay and added these to the inner strands for a scalloped look. A large heart charm hangs from the center bow, which is made of recycled fabric, lace and ribbon scraps. The various shades of pink totally connect to Valentine's day, along with the cute decorated puppies and clay hearts! I also love the girly-ness of this necklace; it's a true statement piece that will catch everyone's eyes! Allison Cooling

Loves Me Like a Rock (gemstones) – Lauren Potts "In My Heart of Hearts"
"I used bronze and bright copper wire, antiqued copper chain and earwires, along with amethyst rounds and briolettes. I handmade the heart frames myself and wrapped the amethyst around the edges. I used chain links to hang the middle briolettes and earring wire. Amethyst seems to be rooted in a lot of gemstone jewelry so I called this "In My Heart of Hearts" because in my heart of hearts it will always be amethyst! Lauren Potts
