What is enameled copper and how is it made? Copper enameling is the art of fusing glass onto copper. It is a very labor intensive process. After hand cutting, filing and shaping each piece of copper it is cleaned using sandpaper and then powdered enamel (glass) is added. Each piece is then fired in a kiln at approximately 1500-1600° Fahrenheit. Additional layers of enamel may be added to a piece depending on the piece itself; generally all pendants have enamel added 3-4 times during the process. An interesting aspect to the process is the immediacy of it. Because the pendants are able to cool relatively quickly, it allows for spontaneity during the process.
