Chrysoprase (also spelled Chrysophrase) is a gemstone variety of chalcedony that contains small quantities of nickel. Its color is typically an apple-green color but can range widely from a light, delicate green to deep green. It is a cryptocrystalline quartz, meaning it consists of tiny, microscopic crystals rendering it an opaque appearance. Other stones in the cryptocrystalline family include agate, carnelian, and onyx.
Chrysoprase has a hardness of 6 to 7 on the moh’s scale.
Myths and Therapeutic Properties
It is believed that the word Chrysoprase comes from the Greek chrysos meaning “gold” and prason meaning “leek”. Therapeutically Chrysoprase is thought to offer spiritual protection, as well as aid in overcoming personal and professional issues without being influenced by others.
