These beads were made by pulverizing old (recycled) glass, which is then poured into molds and then placed in a crude earthen oven where the powered is molten into glass. They are often referred to as "powder glass" beads as well as "sand cast". Most of the beads were hand painted. The strand measures approx 28" and there are approx 57 beads in total, measuring 11-17mm x 8mm. They are strung on raffia and were handcrafted in Ghana, Africa.

Colorful, quirky, whimsical, jazzy....

I ADORE these. They're fun, colorful, quirky, whimsical, jazzy, colorful, primitive and oddly shaped, which totally works with my aesthetic. I love the hand-crafted, hand-painted nature of these. A few of these mixed with solid bone or glass spacers look GREAT paired with a Coptic cross. You can use one (or three) on a leather bracelet: tie a knot on either side of the beads to hold them in place, and add leather crimps on the ends. Use the darker colors, some thick leather, and it's definitely masculine enough for guys. Some of the beads are slightly curved, like elbow macaroni. Those work best in bracelets, but not so well in longer necklaces. If you're into unique and ethnic, you'll have a ball with these.
