Howlite:

Howlite deposits are found in many areas of North America, but mainly Canada (Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, New Brunswick) and the United States, with the majority found in California.

Howlite is a phosphate gemstone and in its pure form it is always white or gray with either an opaque or slightly translucent appearance. Many stones have black or gray spider web matrix extending throughout the piece. Today Howlite is found in a variety of colors. These colored stones are actually dyed, as it can accept dyes quite easily. Because of this, it is occasionally sold by dishonest gemstone dealers imitating more expensive stones, such as turquoise and lapis.

Howlite is a very soft stone with Moh’s scale rating of 3.5.
